Yup yup I agree way to many common names some fish have multiple names some have none and others share common names with other fish. Scientific names are deff better but are also alot harder to remember and not to mention spell. Like if I say a sailfin pleco who am I talkin about cuz several pleco's are called that now if I say Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps now its that specific fish.

I always assumed Arowana was a local term or variation on that, much like the Arapaima Gigas is called Piracu (sp?) by local people.

ok its bin a long while and alot has happend,
i havnt bin on AC for some time, but i have bad news,
my big fella in the pond has died and is quite decomposed and you dont want to see him like this, it appears that a younger tougher specimen has killed him, as we are coming into breeding season.
so sorry all, all i have are memories and fishing photo's,
and this is not a fishing forum.
