This poor guy was left at my work by an older couple. He was kept in a container like the one on the right in this pic- http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images21/SiameseFightingFishBettaTanks2.jpg

With an ornament and plastic plant that took up about 1/3 of the container.

I felt horrible when I came into work to see him this morning. Since I knew if I left him there he would have been kept in the container until, I'm SURE, he died.

I took him home, he is now in a 3 gallon eclipse tank being treated with Maracyn 2.

Is there anything else I can do for this guy? Other than hope for the best?

Oh gosh, I have never seen anything like that.
Might try some epsom salt to expell the fluids. I'm not sure what is going on there.
Might also post this in the illness forum.
 
could be dropsy, does he kinda look like a pinecone from above? If so, what i did to treat that was use maracyn two and added epsom salts to his water. Good Luck, I'm not really a disease expert so don't go by what I say, I'm just telling you from personal experience.

It isn't so much pine coned as just like a balloon. I will try some epsom salt, as I'm already treating him with Maracyn 2.
 
He hasn't change since I first posted. He seems to be doing worse though, he's now laying on the bottom of the tank.
 
I found this on dropsy, if that is what it is.

Prognosis of fish dropsy is not good. By the time the fish has swollen up enough that the scales begin to raise, the internal damage may be too extensive to repair. Most cases of dropsy are fatal. However, if the fish is placed in a quarantine tank and treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic or a bacterial remedy from any aquatic sales shop, then the fish can make a full recovery in less than a week.
 
Thanks all, I'm sure even if he recovers he wont live much longer. I've read that even if this is fixed there is a possibility of it coming back again.

I can only hope for the best though. He is a gorgeous betta.
