The rule of thumb with them is the more you have, and the more hiding places they have, the more you see them. If you have a lot of them but few hiding places, they sometimes tend to congregate in what few hiding places they can find. If you have lots of hiding places, but too few of them, they stay hidden all the time. If you have enough of them, and enough hiding places, they will come out because they feel safer/more confident that they can escape danger.
They love plants. I had one that lived in a plant for a year or better. He rarely came out. Of course, at the time, I only had three of them, so they didn't have the numbers they should have. The plant was about perfect for them, a big wad of floating wisteria. Sometimes you couldn't find the little booger for days because the plant was so dense...he'd just worm his way through looking for food.
I took those three (three banded, although one is of a slightly different species subset) and put them in a larger tank with six black kuhlis. They all seem to get along fine. I acually need to work on getting more hiding places in the tank, as the stinking pleco keeps pulling up my plants.
