I'm in the process of setting up a new tank (40 gallons... 36" x 12.5" x 20"). Originally, I was leaning towards Bolivian or German blue rams with bleeding heart tetras and a pearl gourami. Since then, I've learned that my water may be too hard for the rams to thrive.

Anyway, I've decided to take the plunge and stock the new tank with some of the smaller African cichlids. So far, I've been looking at these species:
1. Pseudocrenilabrus Nicholsi
2. Laetacara Curviceps
3. Julidochromis Transcriptus
4. Neolamprologus Marunguensis
5. Cyprichromis Leptosoma

Any advice on compatibility, size of population, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Also any other cichlids I may have overlooked. (I'm a complete idiot when it comes to cichlids.)
