Thinking of making a DIY canister filter

thanks for the link.... Thats a pretty nice little setup there. The one thing that I was wondering is, the pump is sitting at the bottom with an input tube going to to the pump, how does the water actually pass through the filter media then the bio media??

since the pump is at the top, and the pump doesnt suck water, how does the water make from the tube in the tank to the canister in the first place? Suction?

dang it, this DooSPX!!

It's just being syphoned out since the container is sitting below the tank, just like a gravel vac.

Everything (except the media) was setup with the tubes inside a pail of water. Using the outlet hose, I sucked at it to start the water flow into the container. Once it was almost full, I started the pump and voila, water started flowing back into the pail.

My bf just made a canister filter following the Petfrd.com method. Here's a link to a video he made showing it working and a picture of how our set up looks.

Right now we have it in a brita pitcher to test for leaks and so far so good.
